Community Involvement

First Data is a trusted partner in the communities in which we live and work, providing enduring value and constancy through the jobs we create and through our active social involvement in each local community. Last year, First Data, through its employee giving, grant making, and matching gift program made more than a $4 million global charitable impact.

First Data’s 2007 Global Giving Report
In 2007, First Data employees and the First Data Foundation compassionately and generously touched the lives of those less fortunate all over the world. First Data’s corporate global footprint is complemented by the span and reach of its charitable giving program. Often behind the scenes and always with selfless intent, our First Data family is sharing its time, talent and treasure in the service of others.

Volunteerism
First Data volunteers committed over 3,700 hours in 2007 to charitable organizations that rely on help from the community. Our employees around the world have spent personal time bettering their neighborhoods and improving the quality of life of others. The list below is just a fraction of the thoughtful activities that our global First Data family has performed:

  • Adopting 55 needy families to help during the holidays in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Knitting clothes for African newborns with HIV/AIDS in Sydney, Australia.
  • Building homes for evacuees of Hurricane Katrina in Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and Suffolk, New York.
  • Painting a primary school and collecting donations for a children’s hospice in Basildon, UK.
  • Fundraising to cure cancer in Melville, New York and Hagerstown, Maryland.

Global Grant Making
Funded by special donations from First Data’s senior leadership and the company’s dollar-for-dollar match, 58 grants were made by the First Data Foundation to charities around the world that our First Data employees helped select in our major employee markets.

  • In Greece, a donation to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent aided the families whose homes were destroyed by devastating wildfires that ravaged the country last summer.
  • In Corpus Christi, Texas, a grant to the local food bank supported a Kids Café where children can count on a meal after school while receiving tutoring and mentoring.
  • In Argentina, a donation to a school serving children from remote villages will have a well to provide safe drinking water to students.
  • In Hagerstown, Maryland, a donation to a shelter for the homeless will relieve suffering, especially during the coldest winter months.
  • In Germany, a donation to a program called “Off Road Kids” provided shelter and support to homeless teenagers, giving them a safe place to live and guidance counseling.

Employee Gift Matching
In addition to donating time and talent, employees at First Data are also displaying their generosity by making donations to charities around the world. Whether it is a gift to feed the hungry in our local communities or to provide life-sustaining nutrition to victims of famine in a far away land, over $2 million has been donated by First Data employees. When matched by the company, First Data is making a $4 million charitable impact.

Immediate Response

When tragedy strikes close to home, our First Data family responds.  Such was the case when Hurricane Ike hit the Houston area on September 5, 2008.  First Data partnered with Rebuilding Houston Together, a leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities across the United States.  To help the most vulnerable rebound from the storm, $45,000 was donated to support the rebuilding of the homes and lives of Houston’s low-income, elderly and disabled. The funds were garnered through First Data employee donations coupled with a two-for-one corporate match and $25,000 gift from First Data.

Recognizing a need to assist the victims of China’s devastating earthquake on May 12, 2008 First Data paired with UNICEF, the leading international children’s aid organization, to provide immediate and long-term assistance. More than 400 employees across the globe participated and raised $53,000. First Data matched the employee donations two-to-one and also donated an additional gift of $50,000. Fundraising ended on June 30, 2008 and thanks to the generosity of First Data employees, over $200,000 was raised.

2008 Giving Focus Areas and Guidelines
